THE SELENIUM

Selenium is a trace element, which means it is necessary for the body, but in very small quantities, unlike macronutrients such as calcium or magnesium, which must be supplied in large quantities. It is essential, but can also quickly become toxic when offered in excess. Cases of deficiency are far more frequent than cases of toxicity.
Selenium's main role is as an antioxidant. It works in conjunction with vitamin E to protect cell membranes from the damaging action of free radicals. Selenium and vitamin E are effective when both are provided in sufficient quantities in the camel's ration.

ORGANIC SELENIUM
Camel's Star uses organic selenium (selenium yeast) found in plants, and sodium selenium (from mining).

DEFICIENCY SYMPTOMS
Young camels are more susceptible than adult camels to deficiency, both in selenium and other elements. The mortality rate before the age of six months can be significant. Indeed, if the camel does not receive sufficient selenium during gestation, the camel's muscular structure will be weak. Heart failure will be the first symptom of mortality. The camel risks reduced fertility and retained placenta. The adult camel will suffer from immune system deficiencies.
A blood test is recommended to check the camel's selenium level, which must be within the norms, by measuring the level of a selenium-related hormone: glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px).

ORGANIC SELENIUM

Camel's Star uses organic selenium (selenium yeast) found in plants, and sodium selenium (from mining).
The actual requirements for camels today are unknown.
For a 400kg camel, various R&D laboratories agree on a prescribed dose of between 1mg and 3mg.
Selenium is essential because it is absent from the soil.
